Overview

Some of the most dramatic revolutions in the history of art occurred at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Late 19th century French Impressionism presented new artistic concepts on matters of painting, colour, sensibility and subject matter. Under heavy ridicule these pioneering artists led the way for daring art movements to unfold in the decades that followed. Over three meetings, using the National Gallery’s collection, supplemented by prints from other museum collections, we will uncover the core concepts of some of the art movements that contributed to 20^th Century Abstraction by the Post Impressionists, Picasso, Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian, Duchamp. The Canadian response will be demonstrated in the ground breaking works of Canadian artists in the Twentieth Century.

Important information

Gallery entrance fees are required for non-members of the gallery. If doing so, it is recommended that participants purchase a membership online before the series begins. Folding stools are available in the Great Hall if you would like to be able to sit during the lecture.

Registered participants should arrive early each week to arrange parking (not included in registration fee), put items in the free Coat Check room, and purchase tickets or memberships form the box office at the gallery’s main entrance.

About the Lecturer

Angela Marcus (BA Hons/78 MA/93) has taught in Art History and Art Appreciation for over two decades. She is an independent researcher, art writer, and curator, and has taught for several years for the Lifelong Learning Program.
