Overview
This illustrated lecture traces the creation and curation of the exhibition, About Face: Self-Portraits by Native American, First Nations and Inuit Artists, at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe New Mexico in 2005-2006. Still the only exhibition of its kind, specific works, executed in a variety of media, will be discussed by the exhibition’s co-curator, who subsequently used the exhibition catalogue as the primary text for an interactive art history course at Carleton in which students created their own self-portraits in dialogue with those of their classmates and the artists in the exhibition.
About the Lecturer
I was appointed to the newly-created position of New Sun Chair in Aboriginal Art and Culture at Carleton University in 2001. It was a position I held until my retirement in 2021. During this time I developed new courses on Indigenous art and Canadian Indigenous film makers, and for sixteen years (2002-2017) I organized and hosted the annual New Sun Conference on Aboriginal Arts which celebrated the works of contemporary Indigenous writers, actors, film makers, singers and visual artists.
