Crisis Intervention & De-escalation Training

Complete Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) Crisis Management and De-escalation Training, or an approved equivalent, before your Clinical II placement (NURS 1201).

What the training covers

This training helps you recognize escalating behaviours, communicate effectively, promote safety, and respond appropriately to challenging or potentially crisis situations in clinical practice.

De-escalation and crisis-intervention skills support safe, professional nursing practice. The training focuses on:

  • Recognizing signs that a situation may be escalating
  • Using effective communication to reduce tension
  • Promoting safety for patients, colleagues, and yourself
  • Responding appropriately to challenging behaviours

Alternative certification

You may complete Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training as an alternative to BMS. You may also take appropriate training at another site. Any course you choose must include an in-person component. If you choose an alternative, you are responsible for finding and completing an appropriate course.
